Winner of the 2024 Georgetown University Outstanding Leader in a Graduate Student Organization Award
Today, I would like to take a moment to share an exciting update that is not, at first glance, directly related to my dissertation research but has very much shaped my experience in the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown. 🌟 I am deeply honored and thrilled to announce that this past Monday, I was awarded the 2024 Georgetown University Outstanding Leader in a Graduate Student Organization Award for my role as President of the Graduate Linguistics Student Association (GLSA) from 2022 to 2024!
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who nominated me, and particularly to Erin Fell, who championed my candidacy and provided invaluable support throughout the nomination process. 🙏 Serving as the GLSA President for the past two years has been an honor and a joy. Reflecting on the numerous events, workshops, and social gatherings I have led and supported, I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished these past two years! We set out to significantly enhance the academic and professional growth of our graduate linguistics students, and in doing so, we have strengthened the social fabric of our Georgetown community. 🤝
Through initiatives like the GLSA Student-led Workshop Series, developed by Erin Fell, and the GULLS x GLSA Mentorship Mixer, our projects have engaged students, alumni, and faculty—fostering mentorship, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose across the Georgetown linguistics network. I am particularly proud of how we have reconnected our current traditions—many of which were disrupted by the pandemic—with the rich history of both the GLSA and the Department of Linguistics. Through projects like #GLSALore and the launch of the #VintageGLSAMerch line, we have reignited pride and continuity, introducing our current students to the resources and inspiring stories of our alumni.
As I transition from my role today, I am eager to continue my involvement with the GLSA as a general member next year. I have fulfilled my maximum term with much energy and care, and I am excited to see what's in store for the GLSA during my final year at Georgetown! I hope to demonstrate and inspire all members to recognize that leadership can come from any level within an organization. 💪 Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey—your support and collaboration have been vital to our success! 🙏 I am confident that the new leadership team, with their fresh perspectives and ideas, will lead the GLSA to new heights!
✨ On that note, congratulations again to the new GLSA 2024-2025 Leadership Team: Gatanna Andrade as President, Daniel DeGenaro as Treasurer, and Uyen Bui as VP of Communications! 👏 Here's to continued growth, innovation, and strengthened community in the years to come!
📲💕 As always, thank you for your support.
Best,
Kris Cook
