PURDUE TEACHING EXPERIENCE
-
This 1-credit, required graduate professionalization seminar is the designated professional “boot camp” for the Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction in the College of Education. Seminar students, most of whom are full-time classroom teachers or Instructional Coaches in the U.S. and abroad, deepen their knowledge and skills necessary for online learning, scholarly inquiry and research, and professional growth as educators.
Students engage in career-building units geared towards both professional and scholarly growth, effective networking and educator-brand creation, professional digital portfolio and website development, and establishing and maintaining an online professional presence.
This course supports students who are earning their master’s degrees while working full time, including teachers straight out of their undergraduate preparatory programs, veteran teachers with decades of experience, new or soon-to-be instructional coaches and consultants, teachers living and teaching English abroad, teachers of Gifted students, teachers within bilingual or Dual Language programs, full-time tutors in university settings, and more. Enrolled master’s students’ grades taught ranged from Kindergarten to higher education.
In this course, students also learn how to use proper APA 7 citation and other basic tools of scholarly research, such as how to identify, access, and read peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as how to curate annotated bibliographies. Students used their EDCI 52002 annotated bibliography assignments to (1) better support their classrooms with research-based findings, (2) leverage their research-based findings to promote their causes to their administrative teams, and/or (3) prepare for the literature review of their master’s thesis Action Research Projects (ARP).

Kris did a fantastic job of clarifying assignment instructions and making sure that everyone was on the same page and ready to accomplish great things! She had informative announcements and graded things in a timely manner. I also thoroughly enjoyed her feedback on assignments and found it to be extremely helpful! With her kind and helpful feedback, as well as quick answers to questions, I felt like I could go to her with anything and she would be more than willing to help me succeed!
Kris was good at communicating expectations and guidelines to complete assignments in this course. She gave good feedback. I liked her energy and she was very engaged and dedicated.
Kris, this seminar has been an absolute joy. Thank you for always making it a positive experience. I thought this class was going to be boring and not that helpful, but in all honesty, was quite the opposite.
Kris Cook was always supportive and encouraging to student ideas and wishes for research. Kris was thoughtful in her feedback and in discussion posts. She created an encouraging atmosphere where you felt like you could reach out with an idea or question. She cares about helping students learn and it shows.
